The American flag has changed design 27 times since 14th of June 1777 when the first flags had stars and stripes. Before that date there was breifly a flag with the British flag embedded where the stars are located on the subsequent American flag designs.
In the early days of the american flag design changes were frequent with many designs only lasting 1 year from 4th July, before a new design replaced it. The American flag is a very specific design with strict dimensions for the stars and striped areas. The above picture was taken at WW2 war memorial.
